PUMA FISHING LTDA. operates in Chilean Patagonia's fjord land region based in the Yelcho watershed which is considered by many anglers and fish biologists to be home to the largest resident Rainbows and Browns in all of the Patagonia. In addition, this area also has significant populations of Brook trout, Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon, Chinook (king) Salmon, and Coho (silver) Salmon. In 2017 we began fishing in the Pacific Ocean and were catching Slender Tuna and Snoek (Snake Mackerel), and submitted IGFA world records on these two species. We were one of the very first operations in this region with our floating lodge/mother-ship, PUMA, in Lago Yelcho in 1985.
We have two bases of operation: A custom 60 ft yacht, PUMA II (christened in 2009) in Lago Yelcho which is a 28 mile long lake with 7 rivers flowing into it (including the Futaleufu) and Rio Yelcho coming out of the lake on its 50 mile journey to the Pacific Ocean near Chaiten. In 1998, we built a beautiful lodge on the Yelcho River halfway between the lake and the ocean. From these two base operations we fish various rivers, lakes and estuaries; therefore we have a wide range of options available for the time of year and weather conditions to maximize your angling experience and address your fishing preferences in a positive manner. All of this in a breathtaking setting of virgin forests, glaciers, magnificent mountains, waterfalls and volcanoes! PUMA LODGE is adjacent to Douglas Tompkins' PUMALIN PARK, considered one of the finest eco-parks in the world. This park with its numerous trekking trails to beautiful waterfalls, lakes, glaciers and a hot springs as well as a forest of gigantic Alerce trees is available for non-fishing activities. |
In 2006, the original custom-built lodge/mother-ship was retired and replaced by a brand new, luxurious yacht ready for guests in the 2009 season. The PUMA II, a stunning 60-foot vessel, comfortably accommodates up to six fisherpersons in spacious double occupancy cabins, along with a highly skilled crew of five. Each cabin boasts its own private bathroom and shower, ensuring maximum comfort for all passengers.
Setting sail on the vast lake, the PUMA II navigates effortlessly through various rivers and bays using skiffs towed behind it - a truly efficient and relaxing way to explore and fish this magnificent body of water. From cruising to rising Rainbows, Browns, and Brooks, guests can fully immerse themselves in some of the most incredible dry fly fishing in the world. The average size of these vibrant trout species ranges from 2 to 7 pounds, with double-digit catches not uncommon and even larger "monsters" possible. On occasion, salmon species also make an appearance, adding even more excitement to the already thrilling experience. Many clients who have fished in shallow saltwater environments have deemed this lake's flats fishing as "the best one can experience in fresh water" - and to top it off, it's primarily done using dry flies! Aside from the breathtaking scenery and exceptional fishing opportunities, there are two additional advantages of being on board the PUMA II. Firstly, guests who are unable or prefer not to walk and wade can simply step onto the back of the yacht and hop into a skiff for easy access to prime fishing spots. And secondly, thanks to its mobility, the PUMA II can quickly relocate to protected bays and river mouths for optimal conditions. Say goodbye to long car rides - here, your next catch is just minutes away! Land Based Lodge Nestled among the rugged banks of Rio Yelcho, our lodge beckons anglers with a world-class experience. Relax in our comfortable rooms and cozy cabins, savoring outstanding cuisine and handcrafted cocktails that will leave your taste buds singing. As you awaken each morning, be greeted by breathtaking views of some of the most majestic scenery Chile has to offer. The tranquil waters of the river mirror the towering mountains and lush forests surrounding our lodge, creating a picturesque backdrop for your unforgettable fishing adventure.
